Construction of the Cathedral started in 1368, at the initiative of Pope Urban V in Avignon (a native of the Gévaudan), and it was initially consecrated a century later.
The bell towers were built at the start of the 16th century. The largest bell tower held the "Non Pareille", an exceptionally large bell. The striker was inside the Cathedral.
During the Wars of Religion, the bell and part of the building were destroyed. The Cathedral was rebuilt to the original plans, but with no flourishes or ornaments.
The Cathedral holds d'Aubusson tapestries from the start of the 18th century showing the life of the Virgin Mary, fine 17th century woodwork (old choir screen and canons' stalls), a 12th century black Madonna and remarkable 17th century organs.
