Caving is not a new activity in the Lozère département. Alfred Martel, Louis Armand, Robert de Joly and other renowned cavers have left their mark. Numerous underground networks exist, as well as well-known caves such as Aven Armand and Dargilan which can be visited by tourists.

Two deep valleys or canyons at the south of the département, the Tarn and Jonet gorges and de la Jonte, isolate the Causse Méjean, a high, dry region, with calcareous (karst) and dolomitic soil typical of the major causses.
