Shale and granite slopes
Rebel beauty! Lying in the south of the Lozère, between Aigoual and Mont Lozère, the Cévennes are a strong contrast between harsh mountains and a mild Mediterranean climate. This harsh land, with its tough history and character, was the fief of the protestant Huguenots and the scene of the the Camisard uprising at the beginning of the 18th century. It is a land of shale and gully-like valleys, precipitous rocks and steep slopes with innumerable streams and torrents at their bases. It is also a land of brush and beech forests, with stands of pine, oak and above all chestnut. Despite the harshness, it is also a land of secret natural beauty. Countless hamlets of squat houses have breathed life into these impenetrable mountains. The thankless slopes have been terrassed, and are home to the "golden tree", the mulberry used to nourish the silkworms which brought wealth to the Cévennes, as well as the "bread tree" or chestnut, symbol of the Cévennes and savoured by generations of its inhabitants. |
